A 62-year-old man has been arrested in England in connection with the murder of a Catholic man in Belfast almost 40 years ago.

John Huddleston was shot at the front door of his home in Durham Street, west Belfast, on 24 March 1973 as he returned from a night out.

The case was recently reviewed by the Historical Enquiries Team and passed to the PSNI's serious crime branch.

The man was arrested in Blackpool on Tuesday.

Detectives from the PSNI were assisted by officers from Lancashire Police and the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.

The man is being questioned in Manchester.

Mr Huddleston, who was 28 at the time of his death, was shot a number of times as he returned home with a takeaway for his invalid mother.

As he arrived home, two men drove up and fired a number of shots as the car passed.

He was employed in the Mackies foundry and lived with his mother and brother, who was wounded in the attack.

It is believed the UDA/UFF was responsible for Mr Huddleston's murder.
