Carly Rae Jepsen tops UK singles chart
Published: 8th Apr 2012 20:03:28
Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen has shot to the top of the UK chart after her single, Call Me Maybe, became the fastest-selling song of the year.
The former Canadian Idol contestant has become an internet sensation after a viral video showing Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez dancing to the track received 31 million YouTube views.
The UK's Official Charts Company said it sold more than 100,000 in one week.
Call Me Maybe has been a No.1 in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Holding firm at two in the chart was Sean Paul's She Doesn't Mind. Gotye rose two places to three with his former number one hit Somebody That I Used To Know while Nicki Minaj fell one place to four with Starships.
Last week's number one, Chris Brown's Turn Up The Music, fell to five.
And further down the chart, there was a surprise re-entry for The Script's hit from 2008, The Man Who Can't Be Moved.
The Irish band have received a sales boost after their singer Danny O'Donoghue's appearances as one of the four star coaches on new BBC One talent show The Voice. The band's album The Script, also from 2008, has re-entered the album chart at number 31.
Nicky Minaj has gone straight to number one in that chart with her second album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.
In doing so, she replaced Madonna's 12th number one album MDNA at the top of the charts. MDNA - which features Minaj as a guest vocalist - slipped to number seven in its second week.
The second highest new entry was Labrinth's debut album, Electronic Earth, which entered at two.
Sales of Adele's 21 continue, with the album rising one place to three for a total of 63 weeks on the chart.
Moshi Monsters was the next highest entry at four with Music Box, while Brit winner Emelie Sande fell two places to five.
