A 20-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed by two men in central Edinburgh in the early hours.

The attack took place about 03:30 in North St Andrew Street, near to the National Portrait Gallery.

After trying to engage the woman in conversation, one of the men took hold of her arm, punched her in the face and headbutted her before grabbing her handbag and stealing money from it.

The victim ran off after the incident. Police have appealed for information.

The attacker is described as male, white, in his late 20s, 5ft 5in tall, of slim build with short black gelled spiky hair.

The other male, who did not take part in the assault, spoke to the culprit in what is believed to be an Eastern European language.
