Glasgow honours Walter Smith and Johnny Beattie

Former Rangers manager Walter Smith and actor Johnny Beattie have been honoured for their contributions to Glasgow.

They were joined at the Lord Provost's annual award ceremony by others who have made "a commitment to Glasgow and its people".

They included a doctor, a professor and a law chief.

Govan-born Beattie receive the Loving Cup in recognition of his career in the entertainment industry, while Smith won the sport award.

The Loving Cup is one of the city's highest honours and is presented to a person or group deemed to have "brought distinction and honour to Glasgow".

An actor and comedian whose career spans 60 years, Beattie has most recently been seen as Malcolm Hamilton in the soap River City.

Former Scotland and Rangers manager Smith joined previous winners from football such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Ally McCoist in receiving the sport award.

Receiving the health award was Ian Anderson, an accident and emergency consultant recognised for his contribution to improving the health of the people of Glasgow and keeping the city at the forefront of postgraduate medical education.

BAE Systems, which employs about 3,000 people at its Scotstoun and Govan shipyards, was given the business award, while Professor Jane Duckett, an international scholar in contemporary Chinese politics, received the education award.

Former Lord Advocate Dame Elish Angiolini, who grew up in Govan, was recognised for her services to law and justice.

The Lord Provost, councillor Bob Winter, said: "This event truly is one of the most rewarding for me as the city's Lord Provost. It is such a great occasion and to be able to honour people from diverse walks of life and who all have one thing in common: a commitment to Glasgow and its people.

"I can think of no better way to express our gratitude to these outstanding men and women by celebrating their achievements this way and in presenting them with an award."

Mr Winter will stand down as Lord Provost next month after five years in the role.
