Man arrested after toddler death in Ashton-Under Lyne
Published: 14th Mar 2012 14:49:35
A man has been arrested following the death of a young girl in Greater Manchester, police said.
Roxie Jo-Anne Archer, two, was reported to have fallen downstairs and suffered a head injury on Saturday. She was taken to hospital but died on Sunday.
The family of Roxie Jo-Anne Archer said: "She had a smile that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew her."
A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Roxie's mother was in New York celebrating her 21st.
Shortly before 12:45 GMT on Saturday police were called by Greater Manchester Ambulance Service to an address in Elizabeth Street, Ashton-under-Lyne.
Detectives from Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Major Incident Team are investigating the circumstances surrounding how Roxie came to suffer the injury.
The family of Roxie Jo-Anne Archer added: "Roxie was a beautiful and clever little girl.
"She had huge endearing eyes and a smile that filled a room. She loved to sing and dance, a little princess with a mischievous streak.
"Roxie has been tragically taken from us and heaven gained the brightest of all the stars."
"This was the first time that Roxie's mum Sophie had been away from Roxie. She had gone on a surprise trip to New York with her father to celebrate her 21st birthday.
"Sophie was only in New York for two hours before returning home after receiving this dreadful news."
Chief Supt Nick Adderley from GMP's Tameside division said: "Our thoughts are with Roxie's family at this tragic time, who are understandably beside themselves with grief as they try to come to terms with the loss of their little girl.
"Roxie suffered a fatal head injury and while we don't want people to speculate on how exactly this has happened, detectives are carrying out a complete and thorough investigation to ensure that the exact circumstances around Roxie's death are established."
