Warrington gas fitter to be charged over Salford blast
Published: 28th Feb 2012 10:16:40
A gas fitter from Warrington is to be prosecuted for causing an explosion that destroyed three homes and damaged almost 200 others in Salford.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is taking legal action against Paul Kay, 29, of Slater Street, following an investigation into the Irlam blast.
Fifteen people were injured in November 2010, including pensioner Marie Burns who suffered 30% burns.
Mr Kay has been charged with a breach of the Gas Safety Regulations 1998.
The charge relates to failing to ensure that a gas fitting was properly supported and protected so as to avoid risk.
He is due to appear before Trafford magistrates in June.
The HSE's investigation into the blast, which has now been concluded, will not see any other person or company charged.
The explosion on Merlin Road saw three houses blown apart and several others needing to be demolished, due to structural damage.
Almost 200 properties in the surrounding area were damaged.
