Passengers travelling on the Central Line were left "shaken" after stones were thrown at Tube trains in east London, breaking windows on trains.

Officers were called at about 1800 GMT on Wednesday to reports of stones being thrown at moving trains between Leyton and Stratford.

British Transport Police said: "These incidents left passengers on board the trains understandably shaken."

Services were disrupted on the route for about three hours.

Eight trains were damaged, Transport for London (TfL) said.

The railway is not a playground”

A BTP spokesman said: "BTP officers were called to the line between Stratford and Leyton London Underground stations at about 5.55pm on Wednesday 16 March after reports of stones being thrown at passing trains.

"A number of Central line train windows were smashed, although no injuries to passengers have been reported.

"An investigation has been launched and officers are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents, including establishing exactly what was used to smash the windows."

No arrests have been made but a search of the area was carried out, the spokesman said.

A TfL spokeswoman said: "The railway is not a playground. Throwing things at trains is not only dangerous but can have serious - and sometimes fatal - consequences."
