F1 chiefs decide on future of Bahrain GP

Formula One right holder Bernie Ecclestone could cancel the Bahrain Grand Prix in the next three days following pro-democracy protests on the streets of Manama.

The race, which is scheduled to open the F1 season on March 13th, may not be replaced later in the season, meaning the 2011 world championship would be limited to 19 races.

Responding to the worries surrounding safety in Bahrain, the Foreign Office has already advised people to avoid the Gulf state unless the travel is essential.

Formula One bosses have already expressed concerns that it would be irresponsible and morally wrong to visit Bahrain following the deaths of citizens demonstrating against autocratic rule.

Niki Lauda, the Ferrari racing legend, is among several high-profile former drivers who have spoken out against the possibility of the first race going ahead.

Should Bahrain be cancelled, the first race of the season would instead take place in Melbourne, Australia on March 25th to 27th. The calendar of races will officially end in November with the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.
