Gulliver's Travels huge at UK box office

Jack Black comedy Gulliver's Travels was the top film at the UK and Ireland box office over the New Year period.

The film, a modern-day take on Jonathan Swift's 18th-Century satire about a man who finds a world of tiny people, has taken £7m since opening on Boxing Day.

Over the New Year weekend itself, though, its three-day takings of £2.3m were superceded by the £2.6m Little Fockers made during the same period.

Ben Stiller's comedy sequel was top of the box office chart over Christmas.

Debuting at three was Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway's romantic comedy Love and Other Drugs.

The film, about a Viagra salesman who falls in love with a woman with Parkinson's disease, has made £1.6m since opening on 29 December.

Epic drama The Way Back - which opened on Boxing Day - is ranked fourth in the chart with overall takings of £1.3m.

Colin Farrell and Ed Harris star in the fact-based story about prisoners escaping from a Siberian gulag in 1940.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Tron Legacy both fell three places, to five and six respectively.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I continues to perform strongly and has now taken £48.8m since opening in November.

Family animation Megamind and Angelina Jolie film The Tourist both managed to double their takings from last week, taking around £600,000 and £400,000 respectively.

Animated release Animals United, which features the voices of Stephen Fry, Dawn French and James Corden, completes the Top 10.
