A man has died in a crash involving a coach, a lorry and three cars on the M5 in Gloucestershire.

Police said the 26-year-old, from the Birmingham area had been killed and three passengers on the single-decker coach had been taken to hospital.

The spokesman said their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Fifteen other passengers were put on a different coach and have left the scene. The crash happened at about 0700 GMT on Sunday.

The motorway has been closed in both directions.

Firefighters from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service were originally called to reports that 24 people were trapped, but a spokesman said 23 were free when they arrived.

The southbound carriageway is closed in Worcestershire between junctions eight and nine for Tewkesbury.

The northbound carriageway is closed in Gloucestershire between junction 11 and junction eight. A police spokesman said the central reservation was damaged.

The entry slip road at junction eight southbound has also been shut.

In a separate crash, 17 people needed hospital treatment after an Oxford Tube coach overturned as it left the M40 on Saturday night.

Five of the injured needed surgery, mostly for broken bones.
