Fire at derelict hotel in Harlech was 'arson'
Published: 22nd Nov 2010 09:58:18
A fire which damaged a derelict hotel was started deliberately, say fire investigators.
The blaze at Ffordd Newydd in Harlech, Gwynedd, on Saturday afternoon destroyed a store room and caused severe smoke damage to the hallway.
Crews from around the area attended and brought the fire under control within a few hours.
John Morgan, of North Wales fire service, said deliberate fires were a "serious crime".
"Deliberate fires are a serious form of anti-social behaviour and this will not be tolerated," he said.
"North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is working closely with the police and other partner agencies to try and eradicate the problem.
"These deliberate incidents are putting extra pressure on fire and rescue resources.
"Whilst crews are busy dealing with these incidents, there could be a real need for the resources to attend a life-threatening situation elsewhere in the county.
"Deliberate fires are a serious crime and, in conjunction with North Wales Police, we will pursue convictions."
The fire service was called at 1407 GMT on Saturday and crews from Harlech, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Porthmadog, Rhyl, Pwllheli and Caernarfon attended.
The blaze was brought under control by 1741 GMT.
Mr Morgan added: "Deliberate fires are a serious crime and in conjunction with North Wales Police we will pursue convictions. I would therefore appeal to anyone with information on such activities to report it to North Wales Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
