'Afghan generation' at Welsh Poppy Appeal launch
Published: 28th Oct 2010 06:52:12
Welsh Office Minister David Jones is to launch the Royal British Legion's Welsh Poppy Appeal later.
Mr Jones will meet recent RAF veterans who have served in Afghanistan for the event at RAF Valley in Anglesey.
This year the appeal is supporting the "Afghan generation" - those who have been wounded or bereaved during the campaign in Afghanistan.
The launch comes ahead of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Britain on Saturday.
Mr Jones said: "The Poppy Appeal is one of the best known and supported campaigns in the calendar, giving the nation an opportunity to honour those who have or are serving in our Armed Forces.
"This year's focus on the 'Afghan generation' is particularly poignant as we show our respect to those who have been or are deployed in Afghanistan defending the values of peace and freedom which we hold so dear.
"It is truly an honour to share the podium with service personnel who represent the 'Afghan generation' of the armed forces."
The Poppy Appeal in Wales will seek to equal or better last year's campaign, which raised £2.6 million.
Nationally, the appeal is seeking to raise a record-breaking £36 million.
Mike Greenwood, the north Wales Royal British Legion district manager, said: "The past nine years of conflict have increased the need for our help both today and for years to come.
"Despite the current economic times, we trust the people of Wales will show their sympathy and support for those who have sacrificed on behalf of their country."
