Northumbria Probation Area works to protect the public, reduce reoffending, support victims and rehabilitate offenders. We supervise adult offenders serving community orders and released from prison on licence.
Northumbria Probation Area covers the county of Northumberland and the metropolitan districts of Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead and Wearside. We supervise over 7000 offenders at any one time and employ approximately 700 staff.
We have 20 community supervision teams around the area, where offenders are supervised on a day to day basis.
We undertake structured work with offenders in a variety of settings to ensure their proper punishment and to reduce the likelihood of their reoffending. Our work with offenders includes supervision, offending behaviour programmes and unpaid work, delivered in the community, in court and prisons. Much of this work is undertaken directly by probation staff, others aspects are delivered in partnership with voluntary and private sector providers.
Probation staff also work closely with police, prison and court staff to ensure sentences are effectively delivered and enforced. We also play a leading role in protecting the public, working closely with the police and other agencies to identify and manage the risk posed by each offender.
All these different aspects to the work of the probation service are explained in detail throughout this site.
