Crime levels in this country are getting, lower, but we know crime still affects us all.
The Criminal Justice System (CJS) is the process through which agencies work together to ensure any crimes which are committed are brought to justice and to help our communities be safer, fairer places to live and work.
The CJS covers every aspect of crime and punishment, sentencing and rehabilitation. It starts with policing in the community, continues through reporting a crime, investigating, arresting and charging the offender, trial and sentencing, supervising the offender in prison and the community, and working with them to help them stop offending.
The Local Criminal Justice Board in Northumbria brings together the key criminal justice agencies to help us to work together more effectively in reducing crime. The board includes representatives from Northumbria Police, Northumbria Probation Area, Crown Prosecution Service, HM Courts Service, Legal Defence Services, HM Prison Service, and local Youth Offending Services. Together, we work to:
The probation service is involved at every stage of the Criminal Justice System. We share information with the police which can help in the investigation of a crime. When an offender appears in court, we prepare pre sentence reports for the courts, to help the magistrates or judge decide on the most appropriate sentence. If the offender receives a community sentence, this is supervised by the probation service and we work with them to help them change their behaviour and stop offending. Some offenders receive a custodial sentence, and probation staff also work with people when they are in prison to help them prepare for their release. Many offenders are released from prison subject to a licence, which is supervised by the probation service.
